DESCRIPTION:POSITIONS BERLIN ART FAIR \nSOMOS + GALERIE van CAUWELAERT \nSomoS is proud to announce a cooperation in which Galerie van Cauwelaert has invited SomoS founder and director Paulus Fugers to select some of its associated artists for inclusion in a presentation he curated for Galerie van Cauwelaert’s Positions Berlin Art Fair booth\, taking place September 27th – 30th 2018. \nThe presented artists are Nándor Angstenberger\, Goran Tomcic\, Todd Reece Johnson and Winston Chmielinski. The presented works are united by an ability to remind us that regular daily life can be turned into something magical at the flick of a switch; the flash of a realization; a spark of inspiration; a small adjustment of perception or attitude. Enabling an observant\, lucid state\, re-enabling a sense of childlike wonderment\, inquiry and possibility\, the works invite new\, more alert ways of viewing everyday life. \n————– \nIn his installations\, wall pieces and sculptural work\, Nándor Angstenberger demonstrates the principle that the most fantastical vision can be based on the accumulation and inventive combination of the most mundane elements. In their masterfully controlled expansiveness his elaborate sculptures and installations convey worlds evolving from within themselves\, ideas grown into accumulating and ever expanding matter. Imaginatively constructed from discarded everyday materials\, they give back to art the ability of wondrous astonishment and whimsical narrative explorations\, keeping the whole in check by a keen sense of composition. \nWhat looks so light\, joyous and effortless in Goran Tomcic’s works\, is actually the result of painstaking and monotonously repetitive process of appropriating and interpreting common objects as metaphors of both mourning and happiness\, space and movement. Tomcic’s sculptures\, installations\, collages and objects\, elegantly and poetically combine references to glamor\, self-realization\, vulnerability and entropy. The consistent use to such materials as holographic film\, sequins and reflective foils\, all combine to create works where the psychedelic\, transcendental spiritual and glam converge; portraying life between joy and dissolution. \nFluently merging abstraction and a kind of digitally informed magical realism\, Winston Chmielinski’s vibrantly colored painting places realistic fragments within dreamlike visual constructions. Translucent\, layered\, fragmentary\, and often highly sensual\, his enticing compositions combine a contemporary sensibility with a classical technique. \nThe beauty of decay\, micro-macro cosmos\, the random alchemical processes of nature are features of Todd Reece Johnson’s work. With the evolution of digital cameras\, Johnson observes\, the ‘medium’ of photography as being a mediation between image and observer has largely been rendered obsolete: there is no materiality. To counteract this\, his work introduces a kind of hyper-materiality\, in which material\, nature\, decay\, transformation and chance are both subject and author. It investigates the inherent disorder\, chaos\, turmoil and beauty of nature; qualities reflected formally in the shapes\, colors and texture of the work itself. \nAbout SomoS \nSelected by Artslant Magazine as one of Berlin’s most interesting art project organizations\, SomoS provides space and resources for the production\, presentation\, and reflection of the arts.
