Navigating our day-to-day lives, we constantly read meanings into marks, figures, and images. This mundane making-sense-of is an act of translation — something becoming its parallel in another shape and form: a sign decoding into a concept. We produce and decipher meanings and readings and place them into our orbits within our subjective cosmologies. Those cosmologies root in and together constitute the network of entangled ideologies, belief systems, and collective conceptions that play out through, and as, our socio-cultural framings.

A Brief Bend of the Shore is a group exhibition featuring four Helsinki / Berlin based artists: Hayden Dean, Polina Joffe, Elina Nissinen, and Xiao Zhiyu. In media ranging from painting to installation and sound, the exhibition examines the underlying logics and shape-shifting modes of our everyday communication in contemporary living. It tackles questions on the historically continuous alterations in visual culture, how we transcribe and remodel our thoughts, feelings, and ideas in different mediums, the book as an intellectual-informational object and what it represents in the post-literate era, as well as the semantic transfer of experience and conception vocalized through language.

Both instinctively and analytically the presented pieces interpret and extend the synchronous exchange of information and meanings between people and media.
